Abe’s Spotlight – Shooting a Desert Road with the Nikon D80

Lonesome Highway

By Corey Nook

Corey is an engineer by trade, but is an avid photo enthusiast who is always looking to elevate his photography skills. He loves spending time outdoors with his wife and son.

You can see more of his outstanding photography here.

I took Lonesome Highway on a road leading to Monument Valley near the Arizona-Utah border in November of 2007.

What I like about this photo is the blackness of the road which adds to the loneliness of the desert landscape.  The rock formations and the clouds frame the shot nicely.

I used my Nikon D80 with Nikon 18-200 VR lens, which was the widest angle lens I had. Since it wasn’t a busy road I was able to stop and get out in the middle of the street for a better shot. I enhanced this image slightly with auto smart fix in Elements 8.

*Abe’s of Maine no longer sells the Nikon D80, but we suggest the Nikon D90.
